It is with sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mr. Delmas Lévesque on February 20th, at the age of 89.

Delmas Lévesque was a sociologist known for his writings on the renewal of Quebec and the Quebec experience (Essai sur notre culture), which were published in Action Nationale and reprinted in the Classiques des sciences sociales (UQAC). He began his professional life at Québecair, in human resources management, before being recruited by the École des Hautes Études Commerciales de Montréal in 1968. He was the first sociologist to join the faculty of this institution, where he developed the Sociology of Business, as well as the Administration and Culture program. Conceiving the cooperative movement as a societal development movement and concerned about the dual viability (association and enterprise) of cooperative and mutual organizations, he co-founded the Centre de gestion des coopératives (1975), which has since become the Alphonse and Dorimène International Institute for Cooperatives, at HEC Montréal. A man of profound humanity, he worked with conviction and commitment in the training of generations of students and within several associations and organizations. He had undeniable qualities as a convener, communicating knowledge and advice with passion and generosity.

All members of the Institute’s community extend their deepest condolences to Mr. Lévesque’s loved ones.

Your expressions of sympathy can be expressed by making an in memoriam donation to the HEC Montréal Foundation in favour of the capitalized funds of the Alphonse and Dorimène International Institute for Cooperatives, or by contacting the Foundation at 514-340-5609.
